Chief Theatre/City Elecric Shoe Shop

Add to plan Remove from plan

The Chief Theater was originally built as the Strand Theater (and was also called the Cairo Theater). In the early 1930s it was leased by R.E. “Griff” Griffith, brother of D.W. Griffith, Hollywood film producer. In 19036 Griff completely redesigned and redecorated the building in a regional Art Deco style known as Pueblo Deco, an adaptation of Art Deco found in the southwest. The building design is linear with vertical emphasis and highlighted by stylized decoration. The series of setbacks emphasis geometric form and the hard-edged zig zag relief found along the string courses is taken from Native pottery, basket work, and textile design. The four bays of painted metal decorative strips add emphasis of the deco design. City Electric Shoe Shop renovated the historic theater building to expand from their once small space to the west into the entire facility, which now includes moccasin and leather belt manufacturing, leather goods retail, and more. Inside the entrance to the store are photographs of the building's history and some small artifacts from its time as a theater.
