Atlantic and Pacific Railroad

Add to plan Remove from plan

Located on the east side of the Gallup Cultural Center- The Atlantic and Pacific Railroad began construction headed west from Isleta, New Mexico, to the Gallup area in the spring of 1880. In April of 18811, David L. Gallup brought his payroll records to mile marker 157.5 for the A&P railroad and doled out weekly pay envelopes for work, tie, lumber, coal, and supplies. Mr. GAllup would leave, but the saying "Let's go to Gallup (to get paid)" stuck around, and the town adipted his name. In 1890 the division headquarters were moved to Gallup. In 1903 the Santa Fe Railroad became a silent partner in A&P Railroad and invested in logging in McKinley County. The train expansion and subsequent logging and coal mining developments as a result brought in immigrants from Russia, Austria, Hungary, Germany, Croatia, Italy, China, and Japan.
